Biography
Philipp Kapeller
The Austrian tenor Philipp Kapeller will join the ensemble of the Staatstheater Braunschweig in the 2025/26 season, where he will sing roles such as Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Alfred (The Bat), Horace Adams (Peter Grimes) and Tebaldo (I Capuleti e i Montecchi). In the same season, he will make his debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Peter Ivanov in the new production of Zar und Zimmermann.
From 2019 – 2025, Philipp Kapeller was a member of the ensemble at the Hanover State Opera, where he appeared as Peppe (I Pagliacci), Monostatos (The Magic Flute) and Prince Andreas Stephan in Paul Abraham’s operetta Märchen im Grand Hotel, among others. In 2025, he took on the tenor role in a staged production of Carl Orff’s Carmina burana at the Braunschweig State Theatre.
In recent years, he has appeared as Rosillon (The Merry Widow) at the Austrian festival at Tabor Castle, as Belmonte in Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio in Zwickau and Chemnitz, as well as in the tenor roles in Udo Zimmermann’s Der Schuhu and Die fliegende Prinzessin, also at Chemnitz Opera (released on CD by Rondeau).
From 2014-2019 he was a member of the ensemble of the Oldenburg State Theatre, where he performed roles such as Belmonte (The Abduction from the Seraglio), Ramiro (La Cenerentola), Lord Arturo (Lucia di Lammermoor) Tito Vespasiano (La clemenza di Tito), Fenton (Falstaff), Tonio (La fille du régiment), Camille de Rosillon (The Merry Widow), Lysander in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Johan in Cristina, Regina Di Svezia by Jacopo Foroni; Hyllus in Haendel’s opera Hercules and the Prince in Yvonne, princesse de Bourgogne by Philippe Boesmans.
The young tenor enjoyed great success at the 2017 Mörbisch Lake Festival as Stanislaus in Carl Zeller’s The Bird Seller and in 2018 with a 3-tenor gala concert at the Peter Dvorsky Festival in the Czech Republic.
During his studies, Philipp Kapeller sang Basilio in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, 1st Elder in a staged version of Handel’s oratorio Susanna, Alfred in J. Strauss’ The Bat and Ferrando in Mozart’s Cosí fan tutte at Schönbrunn Palace Theatre between 2012 and 2014. In 2013, he gained valuable experience as Spoletta in Puccini’s Tosca in a semi-staged production at the Royal Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool under the direction of Vasily Petrenko alongside Bryn Terfel.
He made his opera debut in 2010 in Alicante/Spain in a Yewoon Opera Group production as Monostatos in Mozart’s The Magic Flute. In 2011, he sang a staged performance of the Bach cantata Hercules at the Crossroads with the Bach Collegium Zurich as part of the International Bach Festival in Zurich. In the same year, he sang in the children’s opera Aladdin and the Magic Lamp by Nino Rota at the Vienna State Opera.
Philipp Kapeller is a prizewinner of the national music competition Gradus ad Parnassum, received a special prize for the best interpretation of baroque music and was a finalist at the First International Otto Edelmann Competition in Vienna in 2013. As a participant in the 2016 Académie Mozart at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, he was awarded the Friends of the Festival Prize.
The young Tyrolean received his first vocal training at the age of ten with the Wilten Boys’ Choir, where he gained experience as a boy soloist at concerts and masses. He also had piano lessons and learnt the trombone.
After preparatory studies at the Tyrolean State Conservatory, he studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with Prof Karlheinz Hanser and Charles Spencer-Smith.
