Philipp Kapeller under HK Gruber at the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig

Almost a century after the premiere of Brecht and Weill’s opera Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny in Leipzig, the Gewandhausorchester, which gave the world premiere, returns to the work for two concert performances under HK Gruber. The opera caused one of the greatest theatrical scandals of the Weimar Republic. Shortly after its 1930 world premiere in Leipzig, it was denounced as “blatant communist propaganda of the worst kind”, after Nazi Party supporters staged a planned disruption that caused such an uproar that the performance could barely continue. Austrian tenor Philipp Kapeller, currently a member of the ensemble at Staatstheater Braunschweig, sings Jakob Schmidt in these performances.
