Herbert Föttinger is the current director of Vienna’s Theater in der Josefstadt; but fortunately, he still finds time to to act as a stage director for plays and operas, as he is doing right now for the new production of Jules Massenet’s opera “Werther” at the Theater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich. Sophie Rennert will debut as Charlotte, with whom Werther falls in love, fatally so. Ilia Staple, who acquitted herself brilliantly when asked, with no notice, to play Adele in the traditional New Year’s Eve performance of ”Die Fledermaus” at the Wiener Staatsoper, joins Ms. Rennert’s Charlotte as her younger sister Sophie, also a rôle debut.
