Rare diamond: Meiningen asks Sophie Gordeladze to sing Gabriele in Othmar Schoeck’s “Das Schloss Dürande”

Georgian soprano Sophie Gordeladze has been slaying it, as Violetta Valéry, in her hometown of Tbilisi. Her upcoming performances singing Gabriele’s part in Othmar Schoeck’s “Schloss Dürande” concern a work that caused some controversy back in the day, but the cleaned-up version of the libretto (by the Berne Academy of Arts) has ensured that Schoeck’s great music survives.

This cleaned-up version is the same one Ms. Gordeladze sang last year in Berne and that she recorded on Compact Disc; the upcoming Meiningen production, directed by Ansgar Haag and conducted by Philippe Bach, is the first scenic performance of the revised opera.
