Johannes Wildner: family-friendly music with the Wiener Symphoniker, St John Passion with the Sønderjylland Symphony Orchestra

Working with young people, awakening their interest in and enthusiasm for music, has always been dear to Johannes Wildner’s heart and continues to be so; his work with youth orchestras the world over, his choices wherever he was responsible for the programming, reflect the Austrian conductor’s deeply-rooted interest.

Invited by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra to conduct a concert in the series “Klassik Hits”, expressly geared towards families and children, his agreement was but a formality. Titled “Ein Löffel voll Musik. Medizin für die Seele” (“A spoonful of music. Medicine for the soul”) and narrated by Marko Simsa, the programme stretches from Khachaturian’s “Sabre Dance” via Elgar and Smetana to Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss II, and Offenbach.

In mid-March, Maestro Wildner rejoins the Sønderjylland Symphony Orchestra — he is its Principal Conductor — to present Johann Sebastian Bach’s “St John Passion” in Tyrstrup and, fittingly, at the Løgum monastery.

On an unrelated note, resigning from his position as Professor of Conducting at Vienna’s University of Performing Arts, Mr Wildner has been invited to fill the position of Conducting Mentor at the Conductor’s Workshop with the Critical Orchestra; organized by the Hanns Eisler School of Music, the project seeks to refine the “career preparation for conductors from the perspective of influential musicians”.
