The Austrian soprano Ilia Staple, a member of the ensemble of the Wiener Staatsoper since the beginning of this season, is filling Fiakermilli’s shoes in Arabella by Richard Strauss in the production by Sven Erik Bechtolf. Hofmannsthal and Strauss allude to the real-world “Fiakermilli” who was, in 19th-century Vienna, famous for her Wienerlied singing and infamous for her scandalous attire and behavior. Ilia Staple will perform alongside Camilla Nylund as Arabella and Michael Volle as Mandryka. The musical direction of the production is in the hands of Christian Thielemann.
