Theatres, operas, concert venues have been reopening all over Europe, with strict safety and hygiene measures, and it is clear by now that these are not the places where people get infected by the numbers.
Thanks to the willingness of artists and audiences to adhere to the restrictions, we once more enjoy thrilling, touching, beautiful events. We may even come to appreciate just how important the arts and culture in general are. But revenues are much reduced, affecting which kinds of projects remain feasible. We—organisers, artists, managers—are all worried by the spectre of cancellations at short notice, by stronger and stronger travel restrictions and by quarantine regulations tightened ever further, all affecting our ability to survive. Desperate times, indeed!
