Peter Eötvös’ opera “Sleepless” based on the story collection “Trilogy” by Jon Fosse, who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2023, premiered at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in 2021. In Chemnitz, it is already the third opera by Eötvös to be performed. Baritone Thomas Essl takes on the role of the Man in Black in this operatic ballad about “belonging that does not exist; a sad story full of secrecy, melancholy, and surrealism,” as described by librettist Mari Mezei.
