Great emotions and the possibility of a return from the underworld are the themes of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s Baroque opera Castor et Pollux. Here, the mezzo-soprano Sofia Vinnik, with her characteristic vocal and dramatic intensity, portrays the jealousy-driven Phébé. In the pit, Bernhard Forck—an acknowledged specialist in early music—takes the podium. Choreographer and director Nanine Linning interweaves the elements of dance and music theatre that are intrinsic to French Baroque opera.
