In his very first season as a member of the ensemble of the Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck, young Austrian bass Oliver Sailer demonstrated his suitability for the position, and he did so with verve and panache: The original plan, a study assignment for Sailer to familiarise himself with the role of Sarastro, went out the window as Covid-19 struck again. But Oliver Sailer sang the part a number of times, and splendidly at that.
In “Salome” right afterwards he was cast as First Soldier; in practice he sang, always on the shortest of notices, not only this part but also the Second Soldier, the First Nazarene and the Fifth Jew, impressing all of us indeed.
His next role will be that of the First SS-Man in Mieczysław Weinberg’s “The Passenger”.
