When “The Bat” premiered, just a few years ago, at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, baritone Christoph Filler lent his voice to Dr. Falke, the grey eminence pulling the strings in this delightful operetta. This time around, it is Gabriel von Eisenstein, the butt of the elaborate prank that is at the core of the plot, whom Mr. Filler brings to life.
A few days later and accompanied by Malcolm Martineau, he presents lieder by Schubert that demonstrate the influence of Schubert’s contemporary Gioachino Rossini; the recital, organised in Madrid by the Fundación Juan March, is appropriately titled “Las musas de Schubert: Schubert y la ‘fiebre de Rossini‘“.
