A rare diamond: Florian Spiess in Giordano’s opera “La mala vita” – from Sept. 14th

From September 14th, Austrian bass Florian Spiess is on the stage of the Theater Gießen to play Marco in the verismo opera “Mala vita” by Umberto Giordano.

The composer and librettist describe the fates of debauched men and depraved women in Naples around the late 19th century, causing quite a scandal there, but “Mala vita” soon disappeared from the few stages that had shown it, to disappear for a hundred years. The Theater Gießen has now revived this unfairly forgotten work in all its grittiness, using madrigals and responsories by Gesualdo to comment and contrast the story.
