Short Biography

The Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra is one of the few truly "authentic" ensembles playing the works of the Strauss dynasty and other Viennese composers of their time at the highest level. Founded in 1966 by Eduard Strauss, has had its own regular concert cycle in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein every year since 1999, and plays in other major music centers in Austria, such as the Brucknerhaus in Linz, or the Stefaniensaal in Graz. A busy touring schedule has taken the orchestra throughout Europe, to the United States, Central and South America, Korea, China and Japan. Recently, apart from their concerts in Austria, the orchestra has performed at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, at the Gasteig in Munich, at the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad and at the Rheingau Festival in Wiesbaden. Future plans also include regular performances at the KKL Luzern.

The Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra is one of the few truly “authentic” ensembles playing the works of the Strauss dynasty and other Viennese composers of their time at the highest level.

Founded in 1966 by Eduard Strauss, Johann Strauss’ great-nephew, it soon embarked on a six-week tour of America – following in the footsteps of the original Strauss formation, which Eduard’s great-uncle had led several times through the United States (and ultimately disbanded in New York in 1901).

In 1968, the orchestra was taken over by a man whose name is still associated with the tradition of New Year’s concerts: Willi Boskovsky.

After his death, the orchestra was mainly under the direction of Walter Goldschmid, Rudolf Bibl and, above all, Kurt Wöss. Later, conductors such as Alfred Eschwé, Ola Rudner, Franz Bauer-Theussl, Martin Sieghart and, last but not least, Johannes Wildner stood and stand for authenticity and tradition.

A large number of CD and DVD recordings document the work of the orchestra.
