When, back in 1968, Ruth Berghaus staged Rossini’s “Il barbiere di Siviglia” (with Achim Freyer as costume designer), no one would have believed that audiences would still love this very production more than half a century later. This year, it is South african tenor Siyabonga Maqungo, member of the ensemble since 2020, who lends his splendid voice to Conte Almaviva’s intrigues.
