With his Tonio in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, Thomas Essl was rightly celebrated in November. As one review put it: “In the magnificently shaped Prologue to the opera, baritone Thomas Essl let his voice, endowed with both darkness and an impressive upper range, flow seemingly effortlessly. With careful balance and great sensitivity, Essl used nuanced singing and fully-committed acting to draw the difficult character traits of his Tonio portrayal.”
In December, again at Oper Chemnitz, he can be heard as Giorgio Germont in La traviata and, in the revival of Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, as Peter, the broom-maker.
