Now in her second year as a member of the Oper Graz ensemble, German mezzo-soprano Sofia Vinnik is refining her take on another core repertoire role in her fach, having sung Dorabella this past season: Idamante in Mozart’s Idomeneo. In a production by Philipp Westerbarkei and under the baton of Johannes Braun, she plays the king of Crete’s son — a character of balance and reconciliation, with great humanity, qualities we could often use today.
Her upbringing in two languages — German and Russian — is an advantage for the part of Mascha in Shostakovich’s Moscow, Cheryomushki. In October she will also demonstrate her versatility as Diana Dream and Dolores Dolores in Bernstein’s first musical, On the Town.
