The Austrian baritone Wolfgang Stefan Schwaiger has already appeared as Manon’s brother Lescaut: to wit, in Massenet’s Manon, in which Lescaut is ordered by their father to escort her into a convent to protect her from “unsuitable affairs.” That opera, like Puccini’s, is based on Abbé Prévost’s novel L’Histoire du Chevalier Des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut. This time Schwaiger sings Lescaut in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut in the first production conducted by Cologne’s new GMD Andrés Orozco-Estrada at his new musical home. The production is directed by Carlos Wagner.
