An anniversary always offers the opportunity shine a light on lesser-known works, and the Johann Strauss Festival 2025 in Vienna is no exception: Johann Strauss II’s first operetta Indigo and the Forty Thieves, based on the tale of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves from One Thousand and One Nights, will be performed—adapted and presented under the title Indigo und die 23 Räuber*innen—twenty-three times, once in each district of Vienna, and outdoors. Baritone Wolfgang Resch will take on the role of Ali Baba.
