Wagner at the Erl Festival: Ilia Staple as Woglinde in “Rheingold”

Last year, we had occasion to congratulate Ilia Staple, member of the ensemble at the Gärtnerplatztheater, to the birth of her son Maximilian. This year, the Austrian soprano is back from maternity leave and already performing at the Tiroler Festspiele Erl: In a production of Wagner’s “Rheingold” staged by Brigitte Fassbaender and conducted by Erik Nielsen, she sings the part of Woglinde, she of the famous ”Weia! Waga! … Wagala weia! Wallala weiala weia!” that so incensed early critics of “Rheingold” (and, later, of the entire “Ring”) yet so clearly conveys the youthful innocence that is part and parcel of the Rhinemaidens’ character.
