Over the past three years, Austrian baritone Thomas Essl has enjoyed success at the Chemnitz Opera House with a very broad repertoire, winning over audiences and critics as Wozzeck, Peter Besenbinder (Hänsel und Gretel), Escamillo (Carmen), and Marcello (La bohème). He begins the new season once again as Giorgio Germont, the father whose actions seal Violetta Valery’s fate in La Traviata. Immediately thereafter he appears as Peter Loose in the world premiere of Rummelplatz, a Chemnitz Opera commission by composer Ludger Vollmer with a libretto by Jenny Erpenbeck. Based on Werner Bräunig’s novel, the opera portrays life in post-war East Germany. Benjamin Reiners, the new General Music Director of Oper Chemnitz, conducts; Frank Hilbrich directs.
