Our primal terrors, our fear of the supernatural Evils whose defenseless playthings we are, are at the heart of “Das Cabinet des Doktor Caligari”. In 1920 Robert Wiene created a silent movie of the same name, a masterwork of German Expressionism; now, hundred years later, this stellar work is the basis of an equally brilliant musical. In this Austrian première at the Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck, Countertenor Thomas Lichtenecker lends his voice and indeed the entire force of his personality to Cesare, by day a somnambulist in a carnival sideshow, by night – hypnotised into compliance – the hands that perform Dr. Caligari’s crimes.
