Premiere: Fabrice di Falco as Akhnaten at the Opéra de Nice

The Opéra Nice Côte d’Azur has chosen Fabrice di Falco, hailing from Martinique, for the role of Akhnaten in Philip Glass’ eponymous opera. Léo Warynski on the rostrum and Lucinda Childs as stage director and choreographer recreate the New Kingdom, and the countertenor brings the great Pharaoh to life who replaced Egypt’s pantheon with the cult of the sun god Aton. Basing his work on inscriptions found in the pyramids, Glass describes Akhnaten’s life from his ascension to the throne to his—unsubstantiated—violent overthrow.
