Siyabonga Maqungo’s fall and early winter were certainly busy; he mounted the stage in rôles as diverse as Froh in Wagner’s “Rheingold” under Christian Thielemann, Valeriano in Vivaldi’s “Il Giustino” with René Jacobs on the rostrum, Count Almaviva in Rossini’s “Il barbiere di Siviglia”, and of course Tamino in “The Magic Flute” at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, and next to all those, he found the time to perform the tenor parts in a highly acclaimed “Elias” with the National Orchestra of Spain under David Afkham.
Not one to rest on his well-deserved laurels, he begins the coming month with Mozart’s “Requiem” under the baton of Daniele Giorgi at the Teatro Manzoni in Pistoia, a venue steeped in 380 years of tradition and history, before preparing his “Pong” for the next run of “Turandot” performances; and rounding out the month, Siyabonga Maqungo and his colleague baritone Dominik Köninger present “Church Music at the Prussian Court” as part of an Early Music concert under Stefan Schuck.
