Here at last: Wolfgang Resch in Rameau’s “Zaïs” in Biel and Solothurn

In the 1748 opera “Zaïs”, Jean-Philippe Rameau’s eponymous protagonist, a genie, is willing to suffer severe privations to win the love of sheperdess Zélidie. He perseveres, of course, as do the Theater Orchester Biel Solothurn and the artists involved in this staging by Anna Drescher. The premiere, repeatedly delayed, finally took place in late April, with a covid-limited audience of only fifty lucky attendees. Wolfgang Resch, under Andreas Reize’s musical direction, sings the part of Cindor, the spirit of the air who is Zaïs’s confidant.
