As with so many others, Covid-19 has played havoc with Southafrican tenor Siyabonga Maqungo’s plans. Not only is he still waiting for his first appearance as a member of the ensemble at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, but his debut as Belmonte at his former musical home in Chemnitz also had to be cancelled. Maqungo was, however, invited to two gala concerts in Chemnitz, to sing Nemorino’s aria “Una furtiva lagrima” from “L’elisir d’amore”.
The Oper Wuppertal was also forced to change plans and reschedule; its Covid-19-adapted concert performance of “Il barbiere di Siviglia” has Julia Jones on the rostrum while Inga Levant is responsible for what scenic elements there are. Siyabonga Maqungo will lend his voice to Count Almaviva.
