With a libretto by Roland Schimmelpfennig that the author created from his own play “Der goldene Drache” (“The Golden Dragon”), Péter Eötvös has created a jewel among contemporary works, a treasure faithful to the play’s ésprit, its melancholia, its magic and — yes! — its absurdity. Just five performers, two female, three male, embody all parts, often contrary to the performers age, sex, or Fach. For the versatile Austrian baritone Christoph Filler, this opera, shown at the Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck, is yet another opportunity to demonstrate the breadth and depth of his qualities as a singer and a performer.
