In the Tony Kushner play that is the foundation for Peter Eötvös’ opera “Angels in America”, the American Dream seems done, finished, over. A Nation agonizing over the AIDS epidemic and the societal changes of the 1980s is captured by Eötvös’ wide-ranging musical language: elements of jazz, rock, and musical, everyday sounds, opalescent sound surfaces meet coloraturas, Sprechgesang and the kitchen sink.
