The Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich is rightly famous for the wide range of its repertoire; this offers excellent opportunities for artists whose abilities match the repertoire’s reach. Young Austrian soprano Ilia Staple is such a singer and shows the varied aspects of her voice and of her acting: As “Musetta” in La Bohème she began this season with romance and tragedy, and as Pepi Pleininger in “Wiener Blut” she will display the humorous and comedic side of her talent. To top it off, she has already been cast as the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” later this year.
