As an eventful season is drawing to a close for the Styrian baritone Thomas Essl, it ends with one more highlight: After celebrating his role debuts as Escamillo in Bizet’s “Carmen,” broom maker in “Hänsel und Gretel,” and Herald in “Lohengrin” in Chemnitz, as well as Mephistopheles in Berlioz’s “La damnation du Faust” in Latvia, he now makes another major baritone role in the opera repertoire his own: At the Oper Chemnitz, he sings the title role in Alban Berg’s opera “Wozzeck”.
