Siyabonga Maqungo in Madrid for Mendelssohn’s “Elias” under David Afkham

South African tenor Siyabonga Maqungo goes from strength to strength; in Berlin, at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, he just sang the part of Vitaliano in Vivaldi’s “Il Giustino” under René Jacobs to great acclaim. For his next endeavour, Mr. Maqungo has chosen a concert with the Orquesta y Coro Nacionales de España under conductor David Afkham, a concert which features Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s oratorio “Elias”.

In addition to the continuing run of “Il Giustino”, Siyabonga Maqungo also performs as Tamino in Mozart’s “The Magic Flute”, a role that Mozart might have written expressly for Mr. Maqungo, had they been contemporaries.
