What role do art and culture play in our societies during—and especially after—the crisis?

The crises currently putting pressure on our arts and culture are manifold. Ongoing wars require the cancellation of concerts in the Arab world and in Israel. In Europe, economic constraints are squeezing on us; budgets are being cut and theatres are closing. What role can art and culture play for our society in processing the crisis and in making a fresh start afterwards? What opportunities lie within the crisis?
