This year,\u00a0KunstKlang Feuchtwangen<\/a>, a festival founded by Christiane Karg, is a part of the \u201c1700 years of Jewish life in Germany\u201d jubilee. One of the concerts,\u00a0\u201cErz\u00e4hl, dass mein Haus im Kolchos ich fand \u2026\u201d<\/a>\u00a0(\u201cTell them that my home is now in the kolkhoz\u201d) presents Dmitry Shostakovich\u2019s \u201cFrom Jewish Folk Poetry\u201d op. 79a, in the original arrangement for three vocalists and piano; the vocalists are Christiane Karg herself, Nadine Weissmann, and\u00a0Siyabonga Maqungo<\/strong><\/a>, and Ulrike Payer accompanies them at the piano.<\/p>\n

The concert\u2019s title, by the way, is a line from Song No. 9 \u201cA Good Life\u201d; the singer tells of his earlier suffering in stark poverty and how the kolkhoz now offers him a home and everything else he needs. It was one of three songs added in the vain hope of making the cycle more palatable to Stalin\u2019s then-rampant anti-Semitism.<\/p>\n

Also part of the festival is a matin\u00e9e paying homage to Joseph Schmidt, a star tenor in the 1930s.<\/p>\n

\u201cA star falls \u2026\u201d, as his epitaph says: Mere days after escaping the Nazi hordes into Switzerland, Joseph Schmidt,\u00a0the<\/em>\u00a0star tenor of his day, succumbed to a heart attack at the age of only thirty-four years. Christiane Karg and Siyabonga Maqungo dedicate a matin\u00e9e to his memory,\u00a0\u201cEin Lied geht um die Welt\u201d<\/a>\u00a0(\u201cMy Song Goes Round the World\u201d).<\/p>\n
