The opera caused one of the greatest theatrical scandals of the Weimar Republic. Shortly after its 1930 world premiere in Leipzig, it was denounced as \u201cblatant communist propaganda of the worst kind\u201d, after Nazi Party supporters staged a planned disruption that caused such an uproar that the performance could barely continue.
