Operetta only gels if the performers are not only excellent singers but also thespians with rich and expressive speaking voices as well as a strong stage presence. The Austrian soprano Corina Koller embodies all these qualities.
Her recent outstanding success at the Graz Opera as Princess Jadja in Robert Stolz’s “Venus in Silk” comes as no surprise, then; and it seems almost inevitable that this summer, she will appear at the Lehár Festival in Bad Ischl as Laura in Carl Millöcker’s “Der Bettelstudent” and as Kitty in Lehár’s rarely performed operetta “Der Sterngucker”.
