Michael Baba, tenor



Born in Potsdam, Germany, Michael Baba studied voice at the "Hanns Eisler" University in Berlin.

First engagements took him to the opera studio at the Dresden Semperoper, Schwerin (Tamino/Magic Flute), and Mannheim (Narraboth/Salome). As a member of the ensembles of the Theatre of Muenster, the Metropoltheater in Berlin (under René Kollo's direction) and the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz he acquired a big repertoire including roles like Maler and Neger/“Lulu“, Narraboth/Salome, Baron Kronthal/ “Wildschütz“, Herzog/“A night in Venice“, Symon/“Bettelstudent“, Hoffmann /“Tales of Hoffmann“, Tom Rakewell /“Rake`s Progress“, Gouverneur, Vanderdendur and Ragotsci /„Candide“ as well as Lucio in Wagner’s „Liebesverbot“.

His repertoire later developed to include Max in Weber's "Freischütz" which he sang in several German theatres (Dessau, Koblenz), at the Vienna Volksoper and the US, Erik (Flying Dutchman) in Dessau and on a tour to Japan, Hans (Bartered Bride) and Parsifal in Koblenz.

At the Tyrolean Festival in Erl under Gustav Kuhn, Michael Baba established himself as a Heldentenor, making his debuts as Parsifal (2006); Siegmund in "The Walkyrie" (2008), Stolzing (2009) and Tristan (2012). Vienna Volksoper invited him as Matthias Freudhofer (“Der Evangelimann”) and as Pedro (Das Tiefland, by D’Albert), a part which he also sang at the Badische Staatsoper Karlsruhe.

In 2008, Michael Baba gave his debut as Florestan in Beethoven's "Fidelio" in Guadalajara/Mexico. His debut at Leipzig Opera was with  Erik (Flying Dutchman) where he was then reinvited for the role of the Prince in “Love for 3 Oranges”).

He sang his first Emperor in R. Strauss' "The Woman without a Shadow" at the New National Theatre in Tokyo and made his debut at the Opera of Frankfurt with the role of King Kreon in Aribert Reimann’s opera “Medea”. In 2011/12 he sang roles like Tichon in Katja Kabanova, directed by Harry Kupfer, in Maastricht, Parsifal and Stolzing at the Tyrolean Festival in Erl, as well as the titel role in “”King Kandaules” by Zemlinsky at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo.

In October 2012, Michael Baba made his very successful debut at the “Haus für Mozart”” in Salzburg in a production of “Tristan and Isolde” staged by the theatre of Salzburg: Right after this he went to Detmold to sing Parsifal and gave his debut as Tristan at Toronto Opera in Janaury. 2013.

Michael Baba is a demanded concert singer. Among others he sang Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Missa Solemnis and "Christ on the Mount of Olives", Haydn's "Seasons", Honegger's "King David", Mozart's Requiem and Mahler's "The Song of the Earth”..

Michael Baba has worked with conductors like Johannes Debus, Sascha Götzel, Leopold Hager, Will Humburg, Lothar Koenigs, Gustav Kuhn, Jun Märkl, Marc Piollett, Christof Prick, Peter Schneider, David Stahl, Johannes Wildner and stage directors like Peer Boysen, August Everding, Johannes Felsenstein, Claus Guth, Harry Kupfer, Marco Maria Marelli, Georg Quander, and Michael Quast.
