Dietmar Kerschbaum, tenor

After completing his acting degree in 1993, the Austrian tenor Dietmar Kerschbaum studied voice at the Vienna Music University with Walter Berry and Franz Lukasovsky.

First engagements brought him to the ensembles of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf and the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin where he successfully appeared as David/“Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“, Steuermann/“Der fliegende Holländer“, Tanzmeister/“Ariadne auf Naxos and Pedrillo/“Die Entführung aus dem Serail“, to name a few.

He made his debut at the Vienna Volksoper in 1999 as the youngest Eisenstein/“Die Fledermaus“ in the theatre’s history. Since then, he is a regular guest there and has performed the roles of David, the title role in Janacek's “The Excursions of Mr. Broucek“, Juan Santos in Weill's “Der Kuhhandel“, Wenzel/“Die verkaufte Braut“ as well as Caramello/“Eine Nacht in Venedig“ and Danilo/“Die lustige Witwe“.
In 2010/11 he will return to this house for Eisenstein, Adam/“Der Vogelhändler“ and the title role in “Der Evangelimann“.

At the Salzburg Festival he won acclaim as Pedrillo in summer 2003 and 2006 as well as in the role of Monostatos in summer 2008 under Riccardo Muti.

In 2007/08 Dietmar Kerschbaum made his debut as Monostatos at the Metropolitan Opera in New York (with Kirill Petrenko) and participated in Bach's “St. Mathew's Passion“ (tenor arias) with the New York Philharmonic conducted by Kurt Masur.

Further guest engagements led him to the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, the Staatsoper Stuttgart, the Aalto-Theater in Essen, the Opéra National du Rhin in Strasborg, to Oviedo, the Suntory Hall in Tokyo as well as to the Beethoven Festival in Bonn, the Opera Graz, the Pfingstfestspiele Baden-Baden and to the Theater an der Wien, where he did the new productions of “Fidelio“/Jacquino and “Les Dialogues des Carmelites“/ L´Aumonier. In summer 2010 he sang Tamino in a new production of “Die Zauberflöte“ at the Festival Sankt Margarethen.

Besides his opera performances, the artist is also a regular guest on the concert stage, e.g. at the Brucknerhaus Linz, the Konzerthaus and Musikverein Vienna, where at last he sang Janacek's “Diary of One Who Disappeared”. In May 2010 he sang Tanzmeister and Brighella/“Ariadne auf Naxos“ with the Gulbenkian Orchestra Lisbon where he will return to for Steuermann/”Der fliegende Holländer” in the future.

Besides his career as singer, since 2001 Dietmar Kerschbaum is the General Manager of the festival J:opera Jennersdorf.
