Thomas Lichtenecker, counter-tenor

Thomas Lichtenecker was born in Vienna in 1983. He started to play the cello age seven and took ballet lessons.

At the age of nine he made his debut on the stage of the Theater an der Wien in the musical production „Elisabeth“, where he was part of the first cast for four consecutive years. Since then he was continuously engaged in numerous productions for Television, Musical, Theatre and Opera.

From 2004 to 2008 Thomas Lichtenecker studied voice at the University for Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Gabriele Lechner, where he accomplished his 2nd diploma. Since then, he has been studying with Edith Lienbacher and studies Lied and Oratorio with Robert Holl.

Thomas Lichtenecker appeared in many productions on both concert and opera stages Additionally he took part in several performances at the University for Music in Vienna.

Important roles and parts in his repertory include the alto part in Pergolesi’s „Stabat Mater“, Bastien in Mozart’s „Bastien und Bastienne“, Pollicino in Hans Werner Henze’s Opera of the same title, Miles in Britten’s „The Turn of the Screw“ and Amor as well as Valetto in Monteverdi’s „L’Incoronazione di Poppea“. He also sang the 1st tenor in many performances of various Comedian Harmonist-formations.

In April 2007 the young singer was one of the finalists in the International Opera Singing Competition „Ferruccio Tagliavini“ in Austria and was awarded „Best Austrian Contestant of the Competition“.

After his successful debut at the VIenna Musikverein with excerpts from Lully's "Monsieur de Pourceaugnac", Thomas Lichtenecker was engaged in 2007 in the production of “Casanova” by Ralph Benatzky at the Stadttheater Baden. In 2008, he sang the role of the Swan in Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana as well as the alto part in Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater" in Copenhaguen. In 2008/09 he gave his successful debut at the Landestheater Linz (Austria) in the role of Satirino in "La Calisto" by Cavalli.

In summer 2009 he attracted a lot of attention in the role of Namuel in Zelenka's Church opera "Il serpente del bronzo" under the baton of von Andreas Schüller at the festival of Retz. Later that summer, he sang the role of Count Ernst Olaf in Haydn's "Il mondo della luna" under the musical direction of Julia Jones and directed by Dominik Wilgenbus in the opera festival J:Opera in Jennersdorf.

2010 saw him most successfully in the role of the Mother Ute in Oscar Straus' "Die Lustigen Nibelungen" at the Munich Chamber Opera directed by Dominik Wilgenbus. Right after that, Julia Jones invited him to the Teatro San Carlo in Lisbon to sing the role of Clearte in Adriana Hoelszky's "Hybris".

In summer 2010 he returned to work with the Munich Chamber Opera in the role of Pippo in Rossini's "La Gazza Ladra". From October 2010, he has performed the role of Bradamante in the new production of Haendel's "Alcina" at the Theatre of Chemnitz (Germany), directed by Dominik Wilgenbus and conducted by Jos van Veldhoven.

In 2011 Thomas Lichtenecker sang the counter tenor part in the world premiere of Salvatore Sciarrino's new opera "Superflumina" at the National Theatre of Mannheim. In December 2011, he convinced the audience with his debut at Zurich Opera in the role of Pipetto in Donizetti's "Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali“ under the baton of Paolo Carignani in a production by Martin Kusej.
