Thomas Tatzl, bass-baritone
During the season 2009/10 Thomas Tatzl could finish his studies at the Music University of Vienna both in lied / oratorio and opera/musical drama with excellent success.
Since 2010, the Austrian born Bass/baritone has been a member of the ensemble of the Zurich Opera House, where this year he can be heard in three premieres.
Tatzl sings roles including the first performance of Marc-Andre Dalbavies GESUALDO (Marc-Andre Dalbavie | Moshe Leiser & Patrice Caurier), in Janáčeks AUS EINEM TOTENHAUS (Ingo Metzmacher | Peter Kowitschny), Silvano / UN BALLO IN MASCHERA (Nello Santi | David Pountney) as well Happy in Giacomo Puccinis LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST and Papageno / MAGIC FLUTE for children by Mozart.
Since September 2009 Thomas Tatzl has been a member of the International Opera Studio of the Opera of Zürich (IOS) and sang roles like Papageno in the "Magic Flute for Children", Hagen in "Die Lustigen Nibelungen" and Alten Diener in a newly produced version of Richard Strauss’"Elektra" by Daniele Gatti or Polizist in Franz Schrekers DER FERNE KLANG.
In 2008/09 and 2010 the young bass-baritone has been engaged by Eva Wagner-Pasquier singing the role of Nanni in Haydn's "L'INFEDELTA DELUSA" in France (Monte Carlo, Besancon and Lille) Spain (Bilbao and Valladolid), Luxembourg and at the music festival in Bremen (Germany), on tour with the production by the Académie Européenne des Festivals d'Aix en Provence.
Born in Styria in Austria, he first got singing lessons by Mag. Sigrid Rennert at the local musical school in Bruck an der Mur. His singing studies he started at the Music University at Graz. Shortly afterwards he changed to the Music University in Vienna taking studies with Karlheinz Hanser and KS Robert Holl (lied and oratorio). He further accomplished his performance in master courses with Helena Lazarska and Tom Krause.
During his studies, the young bass-baritone regularly performed on stage: among others in 2004 in the role of Kenteterion in Richard Strauss' opera „The Donkey's Shadow“ at the Brucknerhaus Linz, or as Papageno in „The Magic Flute“ (W.A.Mozart) at the Vienna Jugendstiltheater.
In a revival of "Das Traumfresserchen“ in the Children's Opera of Vienna State Opera, he was selected to sing the 3rd Doctor and the 3rd Citizen. In 2006 he was engaged as 5th Jew in R. Strauss' „Salome“ at the Bregenzer Festival Hall. In a production of "Le Nozze di Figaro" performed by the Vienna Music University, he could be heard in the role of Figaro.
In 2008 he sang the role of Mordax in a production Detlev Glanert's opera "Scherz, Satire, Ironie und tiefere Bedeutung" at the New Opera Vienna. During the same year, he also sang Masetto in Mozart's "Don Giovanni" in the Austrian Festival operklosterneuburg.
Thomas Tatzl has also built up excellent reputation as a concert singer: His repertoire includes numerous oratorios (f.ex.. Mendelssohn: the bass part in the solo quartett in "Elias“ which he performed with Robert Holl in Graz, Ballade „Die erste Walpurgisnacht“) as well as a big repertoire of Lied and a great number of works by Mozart ("Requiem"), Haydn, Schubert, Bach ("Magnificat"), Händel ("Messias").
In addition to it the young Austrian singer can look back on a various repertoire of lieder.
Thomas Tatzl was a finalist and prize winner in various singing competitions, such as the "Concours Ernst Haefliger" in Gstaad/Switzerland (2010), "Concorso di cantanti lirici" in Spoleto/Italy (2009), the "Zadek-competition " 2009 in Vienna, the International Heinrich-Strecker competition in Baden near Vienna (2007), in the International Young Singers Competiton „Klassik-Mania“ in Vienna and also won a scholarship from the Hildegard-Zadek-Foundation (2008).
